Anton Manegin ousts Alexander Bury to enter round two – Siberia Cup 2012 CH
Local wild card entrant, Anton Manegin, got the better of the Belarusian qualifier, Alexander Bury, in straight sets at the Siberia Cup 2012 on Wednesday. He nudged up a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory against the 22-year-old to charge into the second round at this indoor hard court event taking place in Tyumen, Russia.
The wild card recipient warded off early resistance to outclass Bury in their first encounter. After pocketing the match in one hour and six minutes, Manegin comfortably advanced into the round of 16 at this event taking place from 19th to 25th November.
In the opening set both contestants showed brilliant display of power tennis. Manegin swiftly plucked his entire serves without facing any trouble. However, he failed to seek any break opportunity and dragged the set to a tie-breaker. The Russian cruised to a 3-1 lead in it before closing out the opener with a 7-6(4) score line.
Ranked 633rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Manegin lifted his game in the following set. He smoothly held his entire serves and after getting the breakthrough in the sixth game, the Russian bagged the set with a 6-3 win. He was never threatened with any breakpoint and converted one out of three break chances to his advantage.
All in all, the 22-year-old withstood 18 aces in this clash. He covered it up by producing a better first serve share of 66 per cent in contrast with his rival’s 55 per cent and brilliantly marked 34 out of 40 points on it. The Russian managed to click on important points which made the difference.
Next in line for Manegin is his sixth seeded compatriot, Igor Kunitsyn, who trashed the Slovakian contestant, Adrian Sikora, in straight sets to set up this battle.
Later that day, the top seeded Evgeny Donskoy overpowered Romania’s Petru-Alexandru Luncanu in a three-set thriller to secure a place in the quarter-finals. He was broken twice but cashed three out of seven break chances to formulate a 4-6, 7-6(0), 6-2 score line. The highest ranked player of the tournament, Donskoy fired 10 aces and ended the match with 102 points to prevail.
