Antonia Lottner battles past Ilka Csoregi in the quarter-finals – US Open 2012
Seeded fourth in the draw, Antonia Lottner battled past Ilka Csoregi in straight set, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarter-finals of the Girls’ Singles US Open 2012 held at the hard courts of New York.
The German contender adopted the most destructive approach to stain her dominance since the beginning of the opening set. The Romanian tried her best to adopt a very defensive game plan; she evened out the score
line twice i.e. by the end of fourth game to 2-all and then at 3-all in the sixth game. Lottner grabbed a break point and capitalised her 6-3 score line.
The right-hander German participant had a remarkable first serve accuracy of 81 percent and successfully pocketed 15 of 21 points. In comparison to her rival, she snatched one of the three serve breaks. Csoregi
had an average first serve of 59 but she bagged 13 of 16 points on it in the opening set.
In the following set, the Romanian participant was unable to hold her serve for most of the time in the set. However, she lost her confidence and then the German took hold of the opportunity to draw the first
blood, clinch a 4-love lead. Lottner swapped a few major breaks in the set and did not give her rival a single chance to come on top. She skilfully proceeded forward and consolidated her victory with a bread stick.
The 16-year-old German manifested her typical first serve of 64 per cent and successfully penned down eight of nine points with three of four serve breaks. On the other hand, Romanian right-hander secured 58
percent first serve accuracy, with no serve breaks and eight of 15 points in the closing set.
Earlier the German displayed a remarkable performance at the French Open but she received a straight sets defeat at the hands of the world number 263, Karolina Anna Schmiedlova. At the Wimbledon Championships
this season, she could not progress beyond the quarter-finals and received a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 loss by the Canadian junior, Eugenie Bouchard.
For the semi-finals, Lottner will face the local challenger Samantha Crawford. She received a walk over against the second seeded Kazakh, Yulia Putintseva, in the previous round. Nonetheless, the German nominee
has to adopt a more active game plan if she intends to compete for the future rounds.
