Antonio Comporto blisters Yann Marti in 1st round – Todi Challenger 2011
Working up through the qualifiers, Antonio Comporto outgunned another qualifier, Yann Marti in the 1st round match of the Todi Challenger 2011. Playing on the Classic clay court, the two fought out for an hour and 47
minutes before the Italian 22-year-old baked his Swiss rival 7-5, 6-1 to walk into the second round.
Aged 23, Marti had been the dominator of the rival between the two and seemingly was predicted to extend the head-to-head lead, however, went down shattering. Comparatively both players had been playing their prior 10 matches on
clay and had an equal advantage, though, the match turned out to have unexpected results.
Firing up with the match, Marti served the opening game of the match and rolled down the scoreboard, 1-0. Breaking early in the set, the Swiss extended his lead to 2-0, however, fell short of retaining his lead on his serve in
game 3 and lost a breakpoint, 2-1. Comporto levelled up the scores to 2-2 and switched the serve.
The two then equalled up at 3-3 before the Marti was broken by the Italian for the second time in the set and led 4-3. With a startling comeback in the game, the Swiss mustered his way back to level the scores at 5-5, winning game
9 and 10, with a breakpoint win in the second win.
Impressing the spectators and commentators with a stronger comeback every time, Comporto broke back to regain the lead, 6-5. Serving the decider game, the Italian took away the set winning 7-5 and led the match 1-0.
Continuing with the second set, Marti fought for a comeback, however, came back stumbling. Breaking the Swiss in the first game, Comporto commanded the set winning consecutive 5 games with breakpoint wins in game 1, 3 and 5. The
23-year-old did cut back the lead, however, could not retain and lost the next game on his serve, giving away the set 6-1, and the match 7-5, 6-1 and walked back to the book a ticket back home.
Comport secured a magnificent 65 percent of 1st serve accuracy. Out of that, the 22-year-old won 56 percent points. Majorly the 7 breakpoints were the key to the Italians win over Marti. Overall, Comporto secured 38
service points and 35 returners totalling 73 points to win the 2nd round seat.
The 22-year-old will now play the 6th seed and compatriot, Paolo Lorenzi, to battle it out for a spot in the quarterfinals.
