Antonio Conte says Juventus went for Diego instead of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arjen-Robben-c6521 – Football news
Highly rated boss, Antonio Conte, has revealed the story that he wanted his side to get the Dutch international rather than the Wolfsburg attacker.
Juventus FC head coach, Conte, has insisted that he told the Serie A champions to go for wither Arjen Robben or http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Theo-Walcott-c34873 in the summer transfer window of 2009. However, director of sport, Alessio Secco, decided to pursue Werder Bremen playmaker Diego
instead.
“I told Secco that I wasn't sure about Diego when they asked me about him. A player like him isn't essential in my style of play. Juventus already had plenty of options in attack,” Conte was quoted as saying in an interview.
The former Siena trainer was one of the shortlisted managers to replace Claudio Ranieri in the Juventus dugout, and he advised them to sign an exciting winger over a central midfielder. Nevertheless, the director choose to sign the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brazil-c2858 international and
Ciro Ferrara as their new boss in place of Conte.
“He did not really react and I understood that he felt different. I insisted that I preferred a high-profile winger, someone like Robben or Walcott. I was after that type of player,” he added.
Conte claimed that he was not confident about Diego as he prefers attacking style of play and also because the Italian side already had plenty of options up front. Secco was not sure about this and opted to go against Conte’s wishes and signed Diego to win
over the supporters.
“Secco and the others signed Diego after all, though, to win over the fans. Alessio called me to explain that they signed http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Diego-c11058,” he mused.
However, Secco did tell him about the development. Conte inquired if the player cost €25 million and the director admitted Diego cost a lot of money. He further added that the top officials were in favour of the Brazilian.
The transfer did not turn out to be successful and he left the Serie A outfit in 2010. In addition, Robben joined Bayern Munich from Real Madrid in 2009 and scored the winner for Der FCB in the Champions League final this season.
