Antonio DeMarco scheduled to defend WBC lightweight gold against Miguel Roman - Boxing news
Antonio DeMarco, the current WBC lightweight champion, will defend his newly acquired title against Miguel Roman, the current WBC FECOMBOX super featherweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will take place on Saturday March 17, 2012.
The bout will headline the pay-per-view co-organised by Gary Show’s Gary Show Productions and Antonio Lozada’s Baja Boxing. The ring for the event will be stretched at Polideportivo Centenario, Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico.
The duo recently met in the pre-bout weigh-in press conference and shared their thoughts about today’s engagement. DeMarco, widely known as ‘Tony De Marco’, has been in a total 29 bouts and came out victorious in 26. He has lost just two bouts in his young
career against Edwin Valero and Anthony Vasquez.
The young Mexican has collected 19 of his wins by knockout and will enter the ring to defend his newly acquired WBC lightweight title for the first time. The 26-year-old southpaw recently nailed Reyes Sanchez to grasp the WBC silver lightweight gold and
later on in the next bout knocked out Jorge Linares to collect the vacant WBC lightweight title.
Reyes and Jorge both are considered ace pugilists in the division and a win over them is definitely a huge feat for the surging world number five and Mexico’s number two DeMarco. Miguel, on the other hand, seriously overshadows Antonio by his experience.
Roman, also known as the ‘Mickey’, has been in a total 46 brawls and came out victorious in 37. He has collected 28 of his wins by knockout. Antonio is a southpaw and Miguel is an orthodox. In addition, DeMarco has a good height advantage as compared to
Miguel.
Moreover Miguel is coming from a unanimous decision loss to Javier Fortuna, a young brawler who has just fought 17 brawls. Therefore these aspects will definitely raise the current champ’s confidence while defending his gold.
During the press conference Miguel took an aggressive stance and said, “I am well prepared for this fight. You already know me and on Saturday I am going to give a great show and I am going to win the fight. I am here in DeMarco’s backyard for his title.
All I hope is that he is not scared of me and for him to stand and exchange punches with me.”
The young DeMarco also put forth his sheer enthusiasm in defending the title and said, “I am ready to fight at the pace my challenger sets. I am very strong, especially mentally and God willing, we are going to win on Saturday. I am motivated by my opponent’s
style and the fact that nobody has ever knocked him out, I want to be the first.”
The event which will be televised on Mexico Televisa will also put forth the Mexican fans a skirmish between Antonio Lozada Junior and Daniel Valenzuela.
