Antonio DeMarco successfully retains WBC lightweight gold by knocking Miguel Roman out - Boxing news
Antonio DeMarco, the Mexican WBC lightweight champion, fulfilled every single word of his promise and successfully defended his gold by collecting a fifth round knockout win over Miguel Roman, the current WBC FECOMBOX super featherweight champion, on March
17, 2012.
The event was jointly organised and promoted by Antonio Lozada of Baja Boxing and Gary Shaw of Gary Shaw Productions and the ring for the event was set up at Polideportivo Centenario situated in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. The duo headlined the pay-per-view
which was televised live on Mexico Televisa.
During the pre-bout press conference, DeMarco vowed his fellow countrymen and worldwide fans that he will not only defend his title authoritatively but will also gift Miguel his career’s first knockout defeat.
Antonio recently acquired the vacant WBC lightweight title from Jorge Linares and also nailed Reyes Sanchez to become the number on contender for the WBC lightweight title. Miguel, on the other hand, was coming from a unanimous decision loss to the young
surging undefeated Javier Fortuna.
It was Roman’s last loss that raised questions about his declining brawling abilities and the deficiencies that has altogether tarnished the resume of the former WBC international super featherweight champion.
DeMarco has been in a total 30 bouts and came out victorious in 26. He has collected 19 of his wins by knockout and lost just two bouts to Edwin Valero and Anthony Vasquez. Roman, widely known as the ‘Mickey’, has been in a total 46 brawls and came out
victorious in 37.
He has collected 28 wins by knockout and does possess decent knockout ability but recently has started to lose his edge. Antonio, also known as ‘Tony De Marco’, started the things off and did not allow Miguel even a split chance to hit a well-connected fist.
Miguel though experienced yet faced severe difficulty in piercing through the strong defence of the southpaw Antonio. DeMarco’s jabs were too frequent and were almost invisible to Miguel who unable to understand the right-left fist combination of the champion.
The 12-round bout entered in its final phase and in the fifth round Antonio unleashed his final attack over the already exhausted and overwhelmed Miguel. Roman, who was unable to even defend himself, started to fadeout and Laurentino Ramirez Oropeza, the
bout-referee finally intervened to halt the skirmish.
This was Antonio’s first title defence and he successfully proved that he is a man of his words by nullifying all the odds and by overcoming Miguel’s experience factor. DeMarco now has 27 wins in his account and 20 of them by knockout whereas Miguel has
collected his career’s tenth defeat and first ever by KO.
