Antonio DeMarco to defend WBC lightweight title against John Molina – Boxing News
Antonio DeMarco, the current WBC lightweight champion, will defend his title for the third consecutive time against surging American pugilist John Molina, the former WBO NABO lightweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will be held on September 8, 2012.
The duo will co-headline the pay-per-view jointly organised and promoted by Dan Goossen of Goossen Tutor and Gary Shaw of Gary Shaw Productions. In addition, the showdown will be headlined by the bout between Andre Ward and Chad Dawson with the former defending
his WBC and WBA world super middleweight titles.
The fight card will be televised live from Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, United States and will be broadcasted as HBO’s special Saturday night weekly boxing show. Antonio and John recently met at a press conference and shared their thoughts about
the bout.
Mexican Antonio will enter his career’s 31st bout, boasting 27 wins with 20 coming by way of knockout. The southpaw DeMarco proudly resides at the second spot in World Boxing Organisation’s rankings and is dubbed as one of the best pounders in the division
with high levels of resilience.
During the media interaction, Antonio vowed that he will strive hard to defend his titles and the second spot in the divisional rankings. Also known as ‘Tony de Marco’, Antonio stated, “I will represent my country of Mexico with courage and honour when I
step in the ring with Molina. I accomplished my dream of becoming a world champion and now I will die in the ring to keep it. Molina is fighting for his first world title so he’s going to bring a lot of heart into the ring, but my heart and desire to keep
my belt will take me to victory. I will remain champion!”
His Saturday night opponent, John, 29, is a surging American prospect who boasts 24 wins in a total of 25 bouts. The young lad has only lost one bout in his career to Martin Honorio and since then is on a six-bout win streak.
Furthermore, Molina is also famous for being a decent knockout pounder as he has collected 19 of his wins by knocking the opponents out cold. When asked as to how he feels about the upcoming clash, Molina remarked that he does not see the bout going 12-rounds,
adding that the bout will definitely be ranked as the fight of the year.
As far as the stats are concerned, Antonio is the clear favourite in fact he has already won the bout at least on paper. For Molina, the bout is a milestone moment as this will be the first time that the Californian will enter in a world title bout.
