Antonio Lascuna finishes second at the Mercuries Taiwan Masters
Antonio Lascuna of the Philippines carded a one-over par 73 in the final round of the Mercuries Taiwan Masters, to take the second position, on Sunday, September 30, 2012.
The Asian Tour event was being played at the Taiwan Golf & Country Club, which is regarded as one of the toughest golf courses in Chinese Taipei.
The official scores at the end of the tournament spoke of the difficult layout of the course.
At the end of the tournament, there was only one player, who had an under par score - Tsai Chi-Huang carded a four-under par overall score to take the title home.
Lascuna, in the meantime, finished with an even-par score to restrict David Lipsky and Chan Yih-Shin on a tied third position. Throughout the final day, the Filipino remained in contention for the top spot on the leaderboard.
However, his back-nine performance did not help him much, as he failed to earn enough shots that could have challenged the in-form Chi-Huang.
Standing on the 18th green, he had a one-under par overall score. Moreover, he had a chance of making it a two-under par by draining a birdie putt.
Conversely, he failed to make an accurate shot and the ball kept on rolling after missing the cup. As a result, it became difficult for him to save the par and he three putted for a bogey.
“I saw the scores and I knew I had a chance to win. But I was playing par golf for most of the second nine and couldn’t score. I’m still happy with my result. I haven’t been in this position for a long time!” he said.
The 41-year-old is still searching for the first Asian Tour victory of his career. According to him, he played brilliantly in the tournament, especially when the course conditions were not favouring the players in the field.
Therefore, he only needs to focus on his putting technique, as it can play a key role in his maiden victory on the tour.
He believes that putting is the main differentiating factor between coming close and winning a tournament.
