Antonio Lascuna looks impressive after the first round of the Malaysian Open – Golf News
Antonio Lascuna fired a five-under par 67 in the opening round of the Maybank Malaysian Open to finish three strokes off the pace set by Charl Schwartzel, on Thursday, April 12, 2012.
Lascuna has not secured any wins in any event on the Asian Tour yet. However, he has now given a hint of his capability of earning one.
He looked pleased with his performance and said that he played really well on the opening day, especially against the players who partnered him in the flight to Malaysia.
He flew to Kuala Lumpur along with Johan Edfors and Paul Lawrie who carded 75 and 73, respectively.
Moreover, he told that he was enjoying his putting on the course. According to him, the best putt of the day came when he sank a 15-foot birdie shot at the ninth hole.
“My putting is really good,” he said. “I made a few long putts. On number nine, that was a lucky putt”.
"I'm using a new putter here. Previously, I was using a short putter but now I've changed to the conventional one. The short putter was not working too well for me because it hurts my back," the 41-year-old Filipino said.
Luscana has a great track record in Malaysia, as he won the Selangor Masters in 2007 and tied for the third place last year. Moreover, he recorded a runner-up position in the Johor Open in 2007.
When he was asked about the reason of such a difference in his performance compared to other parts of the world, he replied:
"Honestly, I don't know. A lot of the Filipino media have asked me the same question. Maybe the weather here feels the same like in the Philippines so I feel comfortable".
He is now aiming to become the first player from Philippines to record a win in the Malaysian Open since the last victory came in 1970 by Ben Arda.
He said that he will try to improve his score in the upcoming rounds, with a display of consistent performance, to remain in contention.
Meanwhile, Indian Jeev Milkha Singh carded a seven-under par 65 to lead the Asians followed by his compatriot, Jyoti Randhawa, at six-under par 66.
