Antonio Lascuna shares second position at the Mercuries Taiwan Masters on day one
Antonio Lascuna of Philippines carded a two-under par 70 in the opening round of the Mercuries Taiwan Masters, and shared the second spot on the leaderboard, on Thursday, September 27, 2012.
The US$600,000 Asian Tour event is being staged at the Taiwan Golf & Country Club, which is known for its difficult layout.
Therefore, it was a decent score posted by the Filipino, considering the fact that only 12 players managed to break the par mark on day one.
According to him, it was really tough to post low scores, especially when the winds were blowing strongly on the venue course.
Moreover, it was essential for the players to make accurate calculations off the tee. Otherwise, it was very difficult to save the pars because of the thickness of the roughs.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he told that the key to success on the course will be to play defensively throughout the week.
He said that he tried not to attack the pins and remained focused on hitting the greens in regulation. As a result, he did not face much difficulty in saving the pars in the opening round.
“You must have technique when you play this golf course,” he said. “I didn’t attack the pins. I just aimed for spots before the green and stayed patient. I’ve played here many times and I like this course. It reminds me of the Wack Wack Golf and Country
Club in the Philippines”.
“You must have a very strong mental game here. If you get ahead of yourself, you will not score. That’s what I did and was rewarded with my round,” he added.
According to the golf commentators, the players should focus on their games, as the players with good shot-game techniques dominated on day one.
Lien Chi-Wei of Chinese Taipei, who is known for his good putting technique, made it to the top of the leaderboard, after posting a sparkling six-under par 66.
During the first round, he used only 26 putts to open up a four-stroke lead over his rivals. Therefore, he provided his competitors a clear idea of what will be the key to success this week in Taipei.
