Antonio Margarito issues retirement statement – Boxing News
After thorough consideration, former WBA, WBO & IBF Welterweight Champion has finally decided to hang up his gloves. Nicknamed El Tornado de Tijuana, Margarito believes it is time for him to start a new chapter in his life. After spending 18 years in the
industry, Margarito has finally decided to end his reign as a professional boxer.
Margarito is currently 34 and has fought 47 fights to date. He stands with 38 wins, 8 losses and 27 knockouts in his portfolio. Margarito announced his retirement through his website and Facebook page. His statement read, “After much thought and extended
conversations with my family and team, we have all agreed that the time to hang up my gloves and begin a new chapter in life has arrived.
Mexico's Antonio Margarito, the former world welterweight champion who was suspended for 16 months after plaster was found in his gloves, retired on Thursday after an 18-year pro boxing career. I always told my family and team that I would walk away from
boxing when I felt I could no longer compete at the level I believed I needed to be in order to be successful. Although the passion and drive are still there, I have to accept that my time to walk away has arrived.”
Margarito’s last fight was against Miguel Cotto, which he lost in the eleventh round. The fight was a grudge rematch after three years. Their first encounter took place in 2008 when Margarito grabbed the title from Cotto. However, Cotto demanded an immediate
rematch, as he believed Margarito had illegal substance in his hand wraps. Initially, Cotto’s appeal was unheard but later on when in another match Margarito was caught with illegal substance in his handwraps, Cotto’s point was proved.
Margarito’s statement further read, “I leave the cuts, bruises, and sweat, but I'm not leaving the sport. I will continue in the sport that gave me so much, now, however, it is time for me to give back to the sport."
For now, Margarito will not be seen in the ring every again. There are chances that he might make a ring return, but for now no such plans are on the cards.
