Antonio Margarito scheduled to make his ring return on May 26 – Boxing News
News of three-time world welterweight champion Antonio Margarito making his comeback came in last week. However, nothing was for sure until now. Earlier today, confirmation of Margarito’s comeback bout came in. Antonio Margarito will be making his comeback
to the ring on May 26 at the Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona, however no opponent for the fight has been announced yet.
Margarito fought Miguel Cotto last in December 2011, when he lost to the Puerto Rican due to his severe eye injury. After the fight, reports of Margarito’s retirement were coming in but now it is clear that the Mexican pugilist will remain in the game.
Talking about Margarito’s ring return fight, Top Rank’s Carl Moretti said, “Everything is fine (with Margarito’s eye). He went back to his doctor and got everything checked out after the Cotto fight. In the fight, the eye was only cut and swollen. No other
damage. After the fight New York put him on the medical suspension list but then took him off of it because he got cleared medically in January."
Even though Carl says his eye is in good shape, whoever watched Margarito vs. Cotto will know that Margarito’s right eye has become his weakness. During his fight with Cotto, Margarito was fresh by the end but the fight was stopped by his corner due to his
eye injury. Margarito wanted to fight but his corner told the referee to stop the bout immediately after analysing the condition of Margarito’s eye.
For now, Margarito is set to have his first fight after being defeated by Cotto on May 26. It will not be a grand bout since no top-notch pugilist will take up a fight just three weeks earlier. Therefore, Margarito and his fans should not expect much from
the announcement. Probably, this is meant to be an easy fight for Margarito to test waters before he moves on with his career. Maybe he Margarito loses due to his eye once again, he might think of retiring since he will not be able to fight anymore. For now,
let us hope Margarito makes it to the mark and he gets another rematch against Cotto.
