Antonio Pitalua knocks out Alvaro Robles to become WBC FECARBOX welterweight champion - Boxing news
Antonio Pitalua, the former WBO Latino welterweight champion, collected a convincing eighth round knockout win over surging Mexican Alvaro Robles, and became the WBC FECARBOX welterweight champion for the second time in his career in a bout held on March
24, 2012.
The ring for the Saturday night extravaganza was stretched at Gimnasio Municipal situated in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico and the above skirmish headlined the whole pay-per-view.
Antonio, 42, despite being aged proved that he still possesses the requisite power and game in his jabs and arms to become a champion and put forth his critics and fans an impressive show of agility, strength and above all resilience.
The Colombian number two welterweight clearly had the odds in his favour since his opponent was seriously overshadowed in various facets. Antonio was entering in his long illustrious career’s 60th bout. The veteran Colombian has enjoyed his career substantially
and grabbed a long list of titles in various divisions.
Antonio has proudly held the International Boxing Association’s and WBC Continental Americas’ light welterweight gold, the WBO NABO lightweight title, the WBC FECARBOX lightweight and light welterweight titles, World Boxing Board light welterweight title,
and also the WBO Latino welterweight strap.
In addition the veteran orthodox has also twice fought for the apex WBC and WBO lightweight titles. With such an intimidating and hefty resume, Alvaro, also known as the ‘Tyson’, was nowhere to be found.
Alvaro was entering in his career’s 15th bout. The Mexican welterweight posed no threat at all to Antonio since Robles had nothing in his arsenal to intimidate the veteran Antonio. Alvaro’s resume exhibited 13 wins and 11 of them by knockout, the only aspect
that was considered somewhat a lethal one.
But Antonio’s 46 knockout wins out of a total 52 were enough to nullify Robles stats. The bout started and during the seven rounds, Robles took excessive beating and was truly stunned by Antonio’s optimum shape and agility.
Pitalua completely silenced his critics and amazed them by his startling form and gave Robles no leverage at all. Antonio flattened Alvaro in the second, third, and fourth round and almost obliterated him completely.
During the eighth round, after the passage of just two minutes and 10 seconds, Alvaro lost all his breath, resilience, and stamina and got trapped in a huge wave of powerful jabs that eventually flattened the Mexican pugilist on the ring floor, signalling
the bout-referee to intervene and halt the bout via technical knockout.
With this emphatic win, Antonio has totally skimmed off the impression of being a loser since he collected two losses and one draw decision in his last five bouts. Antonio now has 53 wins and 47 of them by knockout. Alvaro, on the other hand, has collected
his career’s second loss and now has 13 wins out of a total 15 skirmishes.
