Antonio Tarver taking his bout with Danny Green seriously
American professional boxer Antonio Tarver, who has been the Ring Light Heavyweight Champion and International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Organisation’s (IBO) Light Heavyweight
Champion, has thrown off his critics after he got labelled too old to contest Australian, and current cruiserweight Champion, Danny Green.
Tarver will be challenging Green for the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) cruiserweight title, which Green already holds. Both boxers will be fighting it out at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney, Australia on the 20th of July, 2011.
Tarver expected the contest to bring out the best in him and revealed he was taking the fight very seriously, even though a lot of people had already written him off. The 42-year-old boxer, who also starred in the Hollywood production, ‘Rocky Balboa’, tagged
this encounter as “one of the biggest fights” of his career.
The American believes all his critics, who have always undermined him, are in for a surprise. Speaking to reporters ahead of the contest, Tarver said, “I'm at the other side now where people are doubting me and saying I shouldn't be fighting any more … show
me a fighter who has dominated me? I don't understand how they rank me but they've underestimated me all my career. That's why I fight with a bittersweet taste in my mouth.”
Knowing the odds are against him, Tarver might be relying on his statements ahead of the match, to create a sense of fear in the opponents mind. Talking to the media, Tarver surprisingly, revealed his tactical approach to the match as well.
“The hardest thing Danny Green is going to deal with is when he throws a punch he's taking a serious risk of being hit. He's fighting a masterful boxer, a guy who has been at the top of the trade, and a fighter who knows all the tricks,” he said.
Although Tarver realizes Green won’t make things easier for him in the ring, he sent out a warning to the Australian, and everyone who doubted him, not to take him lightly as his own arsenal of moves will be enough for him to come out on top.
