Antonio Veic topples Victor Crivoi in the second round – Brasov Challenger 2012
Third seed, Antonio Veic of Croatia, bounced back after the thrashing in the first set to defeat the Romanian wild card entrant, Victor Crivoi, 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the second round of the Brasov Challenger in Romania.
It took the Croatian an hour and 35 minutes to outlast his rival in a tough contest.
Crivoi found his opponent off guard, as Veic was not expecting such an attacking play at the start from his opponent. The Romanian hit blows in the second and fourth game, consolidating on the double break to advance to a 5-0 lead.
Veic avoided a French set by holding his serve in the sixth but he could not shorten the deficit, losing it 1-6.
The Romanian did not hit any ace or double fault in the opening set, keeping his first serve percentage at 73 and converting 12 of the 19 of them into points. The 30-year-old stunned by his performance on the second deliveries
and first returns, as he captured six of the seven and nine of the 13 points on them respectively.
Crivoi and Veic started the second set by holding their serve in the first two games to take the score to 1-1. The Croatian took charge of the proceedings after that, as he grabbed five straight games to seal it 6-1.
Veic smacked one ace and committed a couple of double faults in the second set. The Croatian won most of the points on the first serves and replies to his opponent’s second deliveries, as he pocketed 11 of the 13 and six of the
eight points on them respectively. The right-hander did not face any break point and converted two of the five he received.
In the decider, Veic put pressure on his opponent from the very start, as he stung a break in the opening game and held his next serve to attain a 2-0 lead. Crivoi opened his account in the third to cut the trail to 1-2 but that
was all for the Romanian, as his opponent raced to win 6-1.
Veic will face the world number 208, Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the quarter-finals.
