  1. Use a mix of cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle it here and there. The ants will come and pick up the sugar, along with the cinnamon, and take it back to their queen. Ants can’t digest cinnamon and once the queen dies from not being able to digest the cinnamon the colony will die without her.

  2. I have heard that if you put down corn meal, the ants take it back to their hill, and they eat it, but because they can't digest it, they die.  It is good in that there is no poison invovled

I have also read that sprinkling talc powder around the hill works.

I have not tried either of these, but at least they are not toxic.

  3. First, I need to debunk these druidic rumors about killing ants with edible foods.

Ants do not swallow dry food, period. They aren't designed to and don't have the ability. It can't be done, so cinnamon/sugar doesn't work... grits doesn't work... baking soda doesn't work... corn meal doesn't work.

Now back to the subject. If the ant stakes aren't working, you need to try something more drastic. Hire a professional to come to your house and "nuke" the yard. Stop playing around with the ants and just get rid of them.

  4. If you can find the ant mound, use Ortho Ant Killer Granules. You can find many different types of these at your local Lowe's or Home Depot. All you do is sprinkle the granules, then POUR water on the mound. The water will melt the granules. The liquified insectidside will seep into the ant mound below completely destroying it.

P.S. Patrick U is wrong, just sprinkling the granules won't kill the ants and mound.

  5. Boy, if anyone knows of an effective way to get rid of ants, let me know!  I've tried the other remedies and ants still come back over time.  It all depends on what type of ant you have.  My yard must be infested with Ueberants.

I live in the desert Southwest and we get carpenter ants, Argentine ants.  They have huge underground burrows.  You attack one mound, they just move elsewhere.

The only solution that works for a while is Andro.  It's a chemical and one of only two chemicals that I use around the house.  The ants carry the granules into their nest and eventually poison the queen and the colony.

The secret is getting ALL the mounds.

But ANDRO is only effective on about 14 species of ants; the smaller the ant, it appears, the harder it is to eradicate it.  Positively ID the ants first and then go from there.

It also helps to call your local county extension office.  There may be experts there who know all the local infestations and what kind of ants are common in your area.

  6. I was told to use "Vinegar".

I havn't done it yet, but am going to try it out by our garage area. They are bad for everyone this year, and get into our garage if I don't keep them out. You don't even have to have food or sweets around for them, they come anyway.

Let me know if this works for you? Hope it does. Have a nice weekend. GBU.

  7. Use raid it relly helps, you just sprinkle the powder on their hill and the ants will retrive the poison and bring it back to there hill killing them.
