Ants nest?

I seem to have an ants nest in my compost bin, will it cause any probs? x

  1. i doubt it, i found a flying ants nest in mine the other day when i went to put some waste food in there......at least they will be well fed lol


  2. When you turn the compost over it disrupts their nest and the eventually leave.

  3. Hi!! no problems at all, infact it will speed up the composting, the littles blighters are ravenous feeders. the other thing is they always seem to br worker ants without any flying and females around.

    If any winged ants start a nest around the garden, or near y our house, pour some household bleach into the nest and the will fly out very quickly.

  4. No, they will actually help breakup the compost and aid in the decomposition.  If the ants get too numerous you can use a mix of cinnamon and sugar. The ants will pick up the sugar, along with the cinnamon, and take it back to their queen. Ants can’t digest cinnamon and once the queen dies from not being able to digest the cinnamon the colony will die without her.  This will not kill of the bacteria in your compost bin like pesticides will.
