Antti Vierula tailors strict diet and fitness plan for Lewis Hamilton
Formula One superstar, Lewis Hamilton is ready to push the limits when it comes to fitness and building stamina. This time he has sacrificed his winter break to get stronger and fitter for the 2011 campaign, with his new full-time
trainer Antti Vierula.
Formula One is undoubtedly the most physically demanding racing event in the world. In order to prepare the driver for another tough season, Vierula has decided to put Lewis through his paces in the mountains of Colorado.
Vierula has designed a special training plan for the British driver, which includes snow-hiking, cross-country skiing and workouts at the gym. The Finn will work very closely with the 26-year-old all through the year to ensure
that he follows the right fitness plan.
While talking to the media earlier today, McLaren Racing managing director, Jonathan Neale stated, “We’re committed to building a team with incredible strength in depth in every department. By appointing Antti Vierula to oversee
Lewis’s trackside fitness regime and Clayton Green to a senior position within our Human High Performance programme at the McLaren Technology Centre, we’re convinced that we’ve assembled the most experienced, capable and committed team to oversee Lewis’s training
requirements."
Earlier this month, it was reported that the 2008 world champion had been asked by his team to lose some weight immediately. Similarly, other drivers including the likes of Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Williams’ Rubens Barrichello
have also been requested by their respective teams to shed some pounds. This is to accommodate the additional weight of the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS), in the 2011 Formula One cars. Although, many of the teams are insisting its drivers to lose
weight yet they do not want them to decrease their strength or stamina.
Meanwhile, the other McLaren driver, Jenson Button is also busy tightening his muscles. During this winter off-season, he competed in a triathlon in Australia and later he was spotted in a duathlon at home in Guernsey. Furthermore,
the 31-year-old also travelled to Hawaii for a prolonged training session.
Now, as both the team drivers have come back to UK, the team has kicked off the formal training camp along with rest of McLaren team members. With all this going on in the team camp, the heroic British drivers are expected to
return to the track with a renewed form and physical strength in 2011.
