Anxious moments before Marc Leishman took his first title on the PGA Tour
Fredrik Jacobson could not be lucky for the second time in a row, as the Australian Marc Leishman took home his first title on the PGA Tour.
Leishman had to sweat for hours before he finally tasted victory. The Australian had finished his fourth round hours before the results came in. He shot 8-under 62 to go 14-under par after the end of four rounds.
Marc Leishman had to wait in the club house as many title contenders faded hole by hole. Leishman started his fourth round six shots behind the leader, but he soon found his stride and had a bogey free round, in which he scored eight birdies.
At the start of the day, there were 19 players who were ahead of Marc at the time of tee off.
When Marc finished his fourth round, he did not think that it was enough to land him his first title. However, luck was with him and soon the contenders started fading away.
"I cannot believe it," said Leishman. "When I finished I did not quite know if it would be good enough. I was pretty confident it would not be".
Leishman has four international wins but this was his first victory on the PGA Tour, he was rookie of the year in 2009, but since then, he has not been very promising.
It is the fifth time in the last seven years that a player has won his first title at the TPC River Highlands.
Leishman has finished runner-up on the PGA Tour on a few occasions, but had never tasted victory.
The closest who came to challenge Leishman was the American Hoffman. The American was 16-under on the 17th hole but he somehow let his lead slip.
He double bogeyed on the 17th and bogeyed on the 18th to hand the title to Leishman. Hoffman ended up finishing T2 with Bubba Watson, after he shot 66.
For Bubba Watson, it was difficult finding birdies. If Watson had managed to score just one extra birdie, it would have been enough to force the game into a playoff with Leishman.
"It was different finishing early," Leishman said. "It is not what I expected for my first win, but an awesome way to do it".
