Any Advice for a 34 year old trying to get back into Rugby?

After about a 7 year break from playing i really want to get back into it. My passion for the game is back with a vengeance, but i'm just hoping i am not to old. I will have to train a little bit as I am a tad out of shape, but overall what does everyone think? I am 6' tall and about 230...what position should i play. I am not as fast as i used to be but i am a lot stronger.

Thanks for the info.

  1. Agility, circuits, pilates, drills & classes that restore a good range of motion to the support muscles of the spinal column & conditioning in a good range of motion generally. Power isn't your issue, it's preventing soft tissue or back injury. Time spent now giving your body back the litheness & movement you had when you were younger means more years in the sport you love!

  3. play whatever postion u like..but i think you will be at home in the forwards.

  4. Go for the forwards if you really want to get back into the playing side of it. But if you are as passionate as you say, why not get involved in an off-the-field capacity? It is just as involved as playing (even more so) and very rewarding from a satisfaction point of view. There is always a gap for the a dedicated club man to get involved.

  5. I would start by hitting the road.  Go slow at first, and build up to about 2-3 miles per day.  That will get you in fair rugby shape.  I'd also go out right now and play with your local team during the summer 7's social tournament season.  It'll give you a chance to get back in shape and play some touch before the more serious regular 15's season starts.

From the sound of it, I don't think fullback would be the best position for you.  Fullbacks are usually the most fit guys on the team as they have to cover large distances very quickly.  I would probably say Lock/Second Row with your size and strength.  34 isn't too old.  I know guys who play into their 60's on the regular club sides.

  6. hey

Ur never too old to play rugby unless u start to get Grey hairs then u might reconsider. 6 foot 230 pounds, try out for lock, flanker or prop if u want to be in the forward pack. it all depends on how fast u are and what u look like. i have never seen u so it is hard to determine what position to play. but have a go at those positions and see how u feel.
