Any Advice for a Camcorder to document Travel?

I am going to China next year to study for a year. I would hate to not be able to document my adventures. I have a small 6mp camera but honestly I just dont see this cutting it to document the adventure of a lifetime! what is the best device to record my trip for under 1000$?

there are a lot of camcorder choices in China / Hongkong and at better prices - also, latest models as these devices are manufactured from this area. In fact, a lot of tourists pass by Hongkong to buy imaging devices.

Flash media camcorders are coming strong lately. If ur not too keen on video quality, you'll never notice. Well, in fact, P2 (the costliest) is even better than mini dv in terms of quality, because w/ more mb/s, it can handle better video.

Memory card prices wud be a deterrent at this time, but not for long as world prices are going down, while capacity, speed & performance have vastly improved (now up-> 32GB/48GB shortly). With NO moving parts, mem cards are relatively more rugged & durable & very small (can fit 10 pcs or so in a shirt pocket!), all these to the advantage of a traveller like you.

As the vcam size then becomes smaller & lighter... enthusiasts can now concentrate more on the subject as it is not very tiring to handle on live shoots.

Hi Definition is now and almost all vcams can also shoot high resolution stills so for a traveller, one less load (still camera).
