Any Alternative Lens?

My work is mainly indoors, some portraits, and occasional landscapes..if I use a Canon 40D, most people recommended the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens, but actually I see that it will cost more than the camera itself!

I was thinknig of the Canon EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM..what do you think? or is there another alternative that I don't know of?

  1. The Canon EF 28-135 is an excellent lens, I have it on my camera nearly 90% of the time.  The main invesntment in photography is the lenses, it would be well worth your while to save and get the 24-70 f/2.8L, it's sharp and fast best for indoor shots.  The 28-135 is good, it's not overly fast, it is sharp, you'd need to use a tripod indoors, even with the IS it's still not fast enough to hand hold indoors.

  2. Fish eyed lenses are cool

  3. Professional lenses will almost always cost more than the camera...

The lens is probably the most important part of the camera when taking photos.

For example, You would get better results with your photos by taking a pro lens and a mediocre camera than you would if you had the best pro camera and a mediocre lens.

    Now, I understand budget constraints...

If you are looking for a portrait lens and not willing to shell out $$$ for the 24-70, you might look at the 70-200 f4 L not as expensive as the 24-70, but it is MUCH better than the 28-135. I believe the 70-200 f4 L can be found for under $500 if you look around. If you have a few more $$$ you could also look at the IS version of it...

    Hope that helps.

  4. The L Series is the best option.

Did you know that you can get used lenses from places that rent them.  Calumet for example, rents them and you can apply your rental fee towards the purchase of it.

Or, there is always ebay.  With paypal, you are protected against a lens that is broken.

  5. Look at other manufactures of lenses. Sigma. Vivitar. Tamaron and even lenses like Pro Master. Your Canon will take lenses from almost anyone as long as the lens it's self is made to fit your Canon.

You will find that other manufactures may offer lenses you might like at a far less expense and still give you good results. Your not a - pro - and you don't make your living at photography - yet - so why not get the experience you need with "cheaper" lenses. ??

Many stores have their so called "House Brand Name" of equipment they sell. These are cheaper to you and give them a bigger profit. The house brand named equipment is made by 'someone' in the photo industry, just don't have the bigger name brand NAME and price tag on them..

Give other manufactures of lenses a try, you may enjoy what you get..

  6. Get the EF 35mm f/2 - it is one stop faster than the first lens and two stops faster than the second lens. You can use it for mostly indorr work, portraits and landscapes. It's practically the only lens that I use anymore.
