  1. In my family we have a National Hockey League player and a (former) Olympic women’s volleyball team member.

The youngest in my family is 11 yrs, and has been playing hockey since she was 3 in the boys league. She plays center, right-wing and defence. She has several Most Valuable Player trophies. This is her last year on the boys league. Next year, she will have to move to girls bantams .

This summer was her third year playing Fastball (girls team). She is the pitcher and back catcher.  Last year she played on two teams one for the city and one for a reservation. This year in a new city, her team won the City Championship.  She pitched the final inning and pitched a shut-out to win the game.

She has attended many schools and whatever team sports they have she joins. So she has played basketball, volleyball, soccer, and softball .  That is the same with the boys in the family.

The predominate spots in this area are hockey, fast/softball, volleyball and basketball.

Native Americans are very involved in sports, and at every level.  There are so many Native American athleles, here are just a few.

  2. Jim Thorpe

He is no longer alive but  some people refer to him as the greatest athlete of the 20th century.  At the 1912 Olympic games King Gustav V of Sweden told Thorpe: "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world."  In the pentathlon and decatholon he set records that would stand for decades.  Thorpe's name was taken out of the record book and was stripped of his Olympic medals  in 1913 when it came out that he played two semi-professional seasons of baseball. The Olympics Committee had strict rules about Olympians receiving monetary compensation for participating in professional athletics.

  3. For some reason most Native American athletes are pretty good distance runners.  If you want to watch a good movie about this then try to find a dvd titled Running Brave.

I've personally seen Indians excel Basketball and Boxing too, they just like to fight.  There was Indian "yauki" Lopez and many more that were one of the best boxers in the World at one time.

It doesn't really matter because any Indian can start a new trend at any time.  You don't have to be a competitive athlete to stay in shape with any sport and maybe coach or run a recreation program at an Indian colony.

If you want to learn more of this then just do a web search on Native American Athletes and you will be surprised because they are everywhere with programs whether you compete or not all over the place, especially in the US and Canada.
