A fairly common name in the UK - my computer found 200 and then gave up counting (it can only count to 200!!)

It's apparently an English surname, having derived from the occupation, a chater, although I don't know what this is. Follow the link to see a map of Chaters in England in 1881. At the top of the page there are tabs letting you see the distrivbution of the name in 1998, and also some background information.

I am seeing that the name shows up both in the UK and in the US.  Reputable sources also show the name 'way back' in English records.. of course, genealogists are always aware that what shows up in the records, might not be an accurate spelling.

www.genforum.com normally has message boards for most names.. but not this name.

When you run into a really rare name.. the one thing that pops into my mind is that the odds are very high, that the name you have now, can be a variation of something else. You won't know this for sure, unless you trace your ancestry back.  Contrary to popular opinion.. it is not necessary to find relatives, in order to do this.  You would need to use documentation.  As you do that, you'll see who is or is not related.

What on earth is a Chater??...it's not in the Oxford English Dictionary.

Did you mean 'cheater' or maybe..'cheetah'?

Unfortunately cheetahs can't read so will not be able to reply...but there are some...I've seen them.
