Any Dentists, or dental students... why did you chose dentistry?

What interests you in dentistry? Why did you decide that you wanted to be come a dentist or be in that feild?

I have always been interested in health care.  I like the process of examining and interviewing the patient, figuring out what tests to run, making a diagnosis, coming up with a treatment plan, and then following through on the care.  I also like working with my hands and being creative, which is what caught my attention about dentistry.

Unlike medicine, in dentistry you don't have to be on call for long hours (although patients CAN page you in an emergency).  You are more likely to run your own practice, and in Canada dentistry is privately regulated and not limited by the government.  I also didn't want to have to go to school for 10 years to become a specialist, and I felt that family medicine would mean either lot of referrals or patients who don't really have anything seriously wrong with them.  And working 24 hour shifts in a hospital during residency didn't really appeal to me...in addition to the ongoing competition throughout medical school.

There are also a lot of different aspects of dentistry.  In addition to learning all the techniques and theories of practicing, I have had the opportunity to be involved in dental research and public health dentistry.  There are a lot of specialties to explore too, but if I decide to take that route it will be once I have practiced for a few years and paid off my loans. :)

dentistry is more artistic and creative than other medical branches, some other medical branches may contribute in life saving, but really dentistry help people to enjoy their lives, healthy teeth and pretty smile are essential enjoying lot of life issues
