Hi im looking to buy a loose diamond for an engagement and im trying to figure out what's a good deal and whats not. Here are 2 that Im considering and let me know if you think they are a good deal or if its a ripoff.

1. Round Cut - .91 Karat, J Color, SI2, Excellent cut for $2,800

2. Round Cut - 1.14 Karat, K Color, SI2, Very Good cut for $3,000

Thanks a bunch!

  1. Neither one is great quality.  The smaller .91 is the better of the 2.  However, if you have seen both of these stones IN PERSON, I always say to pick the one that looks prettiest to you.

If you are shopping sight unseen (i.e. online) then I would skip both, and go elsewhere.  Purchasing diamonds online is very tricky, and many people get burned by the letters and numbers.  High clarity or color grades do not always make a pretty stone.  And since you have neither high clarity or color, it may not be worth the risk

  2. You need to have a qualified appraiser look at the diamond.  No one can give an valid appraisal unless they see the diamond.
