  1. There is no breed in which *all* kids are naturally hornless, however polled (naturally hornless) goats do occur occasionally in most breeds.  In order for a kid to be born polled, one of it's parents must also be polled.  Two polled goats should never be bred to each other because a small percentage of the kids in a polled-to-polled breeding will possibly be hermaphorites (having both male & female organs).  Breeding polled-to-horned is perfectly safe, and approximately 50% of the kids from that pairing will be naturally polled.  Purebred polled goats are as registerable as purebred horned goats, and there is no reason not to breed them as long as they are not bred to another polled goat.  A polled kid born to a polled-to-horned breeding is no more likely to be sterile than a horned kid.

  2. The horn buds actually start developing shortly after birth, and disbudding takes place before the horn attaches to the sinus cavity and becomes part of the skull.  Horns actually start off quite a bit like a fingernail.

A goat that is born polled (without horns) is usually the result of a polled parent and genetically is often sterile or hermaphroditic.  Particularly with pygmies, you do not want to use a polled animal for breeding purposes, and polled goats are usually not registerable with the breed registry.

I know there are breeds of sheep that are naturally polled, including olde southdown babydolls (which one of the reasons we picked the breed to raise), but I don't know of any goat breed that is polled.  It certainly would be nice if it was possible, because I hate disbudding!

  3. yes, i have goats of all breeds. one of my goats was named isabella and i got her from an  auction we also got another goat of the same breed from the same auction and they seemed to be the mothe and daughter because the younger one always trid to get milk from her. anyway scabby abby the younger one has had 3 goat now and all of them are anaturally born hornless. scabby was hornless and isabella was also hornless. their breed is saanen. some have horns some dont if they dont then breed them with a horned goat. idont know some people  say not to breed them to another hornless goat. we  breed ours w/ kikos because kikos are tough goats and saanens are also tough and produce al ot of milk

  4. ALL goat breeds are BORN with no horns. Can you imagine the poor mama goat if they were born with horns??

There are some breeds that do not develop horns.

  5. go to goatworld.com for information about this.  It gives breeding info as well.

  6. No the is no breed of goat were they are all born hornless. You can get goats that are born hornless but if you breed two hornless goats together there kids will probably be born.

  7. seems like i've seen some but don't know what they were.
