  1. Use this mnemonic device: COVER

C...connect the info you're learning to things you aready know

O...organize groups of information into "chunks" (humans like things in groups of 5-7)

V...visualize information with pictures in your head

E...elaborate on a point or topic to expand its meaning

    R...rehearse, aka repeat

Trust me: it works. The more cognitive functions you perform on data, the more embedded it becomes in your long term memory.

  2. Hey Cutie let's face it what's in most text books is pure fluff or filler. The good stuff ...the meat and potatoes could be downsized to a couple of Chapters not 18. What most teachers, instructors, and later Professors do is cover the most important stuff that you really need to know and tell you what else is important by saying PTQ (Possible Test Question). I used to tape record my classes so that if my lady friends weren't in a class for me to sit next to and copy their notes at the photocopier I always had the tape to fall back on. I would just sit and write out notes after the lecture or that night so that it stayed fresh in my mind. By not having to take notes during class I was able to listen and learn what the Prof was saying or the points that he or she was trying to get across. I found that method helped me tremendously. It required more work on my part if I had to make my own notes later but at least I understood the material better and got higher grades. And that's what it's all about isn't it?

Another good aid is acronyms...similar to mnemonics but just using the first letter of each word to remember a list. For example what are the ingredients in a Special Jr.Pizza - B.C.O.M.P.I.G.  bacon, cheese, onions, mushroom, pepperoni, Italian sausage, green peppers. Helps that my first Degree was a Bachelor of Commerce and I am a ...pepperoni, Italian sausage, guy. ;)

  5. Well, do you feel like it? Really? You must be a very good student!  You can rewrite your notes and the main points learned following the book or the teacher outline and your notes and save it on CDs on your computer.

I try to do this after seminars too, rewriting the notes I took or the main points learned from that.

BTW in Greece there is this weird thing, and I think sometimes in US too, kids burn their books on the last day of finals or tear them apart.  Ha,ha! this is how much they like them! However, I would definitely want  to keep them as I would want them as a reference.  At least some.  Hmm! I wonder what happened to my ol' text books?

  6. Pretend like you are the teacher and teach the lessons to yourself.  Worked for me!
