  1. Yes,she wears her hats more than once. She has them stored in closets in her residences. The Queen does get rid of hats that have been outworn or look too dated.I'd guess that she has 100 hats in circulation.

I also wear hats and would love to see how she has her's stored!

  2. Her maids know, she probably doesn't.  They must store her hats in boxes in her wardrobe/dressing room area.  She has probably worn some more than once.

I hear that there is a nice used clothing store that accepts the donations of old clothing from the royals.

  3. William Shakespeare once wrote, "Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown." Maybe that's why Britain's queen wears so many hats. Queen Elizabeth II has worn about 5,000 different hats over the past 50 years. The hats represent more than simply a fashion statement, hats, you see, are obviously very significant items of clothing in a monarch. You could say when she's wearing a hat that she's wearing a sort of crown substitute.

Freddy Fox, one of the queen's milliners, has made hundreds of crown substitutes for the queen — so many that she travels with a separate train car just for the hats. She wears what she feels comfortable in and she looks good in. It's, after all, a working uniform for a very, very energetic, working lady. The queen is one of the richest women in the world, but she wears her favorite hats 20 or 30 times, according to principal milliner Philip Somerville. He says there a few she chose not to wear more than once.

The Queen is said to take a great interest in her hats. It is important for her face to be seen from all angles and a replica of her head is kept at her milliners. Hats are also important as cover ups as it means the hair does not need constant attention. These hats offered Queen Elizabeth an opportunity to have fun with fashion that was denied to other elements of her royal clothing. She began to wear hats with pleats and drapes and styles varied from wide brimmed Bretons to neat turbans.

  4. she has an obsession with hats and she has the castle to store them all in too.  I love shoes but I do not have a castle big enough to store them.

  5. I'm sure she has hundreds and I'm also sure she has a good size dressing room in that palace to house all her hats in hat boxes. I myself have 30 hats, most are from the 30's & 40's when hats were fashionable, they are smallish with and w/out veils, the kinds you see on women in the older movies.

Queen Elizabeth II's Hats to Mid 1970s

Queen Elizabeth II has reigned as Queen of the British Isles and the Commonwealth most of her adult life.  Her 80th birthday was 21 April 2006 and many will applaud her long service in this role.

As a costume history enthusiast, I think that you will appreciate seeing some old images of hats and turban headwear, which are from the first 25 years of her reign. These pictures show her in a selection of hats from the 1960s to mid 1970s.  Read about the Queen's clothes from this era here. These hats offered Queen Elizabeth an opportunity to have fun with fashion that was denied to other elements of her royal clothing.  She began to wear hats with pleats and drapes and styles varied from wide brimmed Bretons to neat turbans.

On occasion she began to appear at evening events without a tiara, opting instead for a well brushed up bouffant hairstyle.  Slowly the Queen changed her style to reflect modern times.
