Hi There,

I have been considering becoming a lorry driver and was wondering if anyone could tell me how to go about it, how much it costs, how long does it take and stuff like lorry driving for a living? How old do you need to be and how long do you need to be driving (with a normal license) for?

It's always interested me since I was a nipper!

Thanks In Advance!

  1. I'm not sure on the age group but it costs around £500 for your HGV licence and it has to be renewed every 3 years. If you are unemployed I think the job centre pays it for you. I would put the details into your search engine and see what you get - HGV licence in UK.

  2. I know that you have got to be 21 or over, AND have been driving for over 3 years before you can apply for a HGC Licence.

The hours are pretty long as well.  The store in my village is part of a well known chain, and the delivery drivers have to be at the Depot for 2 am, and they get to my village at 7 am to unload, and they have still got 2 or 3 stores to visit before they can start on the return journey.

  3. Best bet would be to first go down to your local DMV office and get all the info on the special license you will need..You may have to take a course, as well...The DMV will have this information as well as might be able to sign you up for the course right there..

  4. £500 for an HGV licence? I wanna live where you live. It cost me £1000 to do just a LGV one (7.5 tonne). You don't say how old you are, the DVLA will tell you the ages for driving HGVs generally it's 21 or over. You will need a medical cert off a doctor too to apply for your provisional in the category that you want to do, and you will also have to take a theory test again. Have a look in the phone book for HGV, LGV driving schools in your area. It ain't cheap, but it's a good career, you'll travel around a lot and get to be your own boss.

  5. good luck :)
