my uncle suggested i get a degree in optometry, he said it would be easy for me to finish, all i need is determination, i have been reading about optometry and aspects of it make me want to choose another field, my uncle said after getting my degree, i could open up my own business and sell contacts + glasses, and do vision tests for people and stuff like that, do i really need to study for more then 6 or 7 years to do this in the future?

  1. Hahaha!  Easy...   mmm I don't think so.  I would say a doctorate degree in anything is far from easy.  You'll need 4 years of undergraduate study, and then 4 more of graduate to get to your OD degree.  But, I do agree that you'll need determination.  A LOT of determination.

Optometry school would have been a lot better if they'd offered a 5th year of classes to get an MBA, in addition to the OD.  The problem I ran into was 8 years of science training, and no business training.  I'm all geared up to see patients, but then there's the 90% business side of our practices that need running also.  The inventory of glasses and contacts, pricing, marketing, staff management, payroll, keeping the books, etc.  You'll spend more time doing the business than the actual patients.

And don't even get me started on insurance.

Would I do it again?  Probably.  But, I think the two best occupations, as far as return on your investment of time and $ go, are P.A. and dental hygenist.  I actually considered going back for a P.A. degree.  FAR less responsibility, less schooling, and about the same income (sometimes more).

  2. If you want to sell glasses, train as an optician, or just open a store and hire one.  Some areas even allow opticians to do sight tests and write prescriptions.

  3. optometrist ??? in 6/7 years ??

    even it's for 20 years

it's an interesting section for me

in my country 5 and  half semester for study and a year for train in hospital  .......

  4. yes.

optometry is a doctorate profession in the US.  its hard, despite the AMA advertising otherwise.

dont get into it unless you want to spend 5 years postgraduate getting your doctorate.
