O.K. to all pilots or people familiar with the pilot industry. I am 14 years old and I am interested in becoming a pilot. I currently play soccer but if that does not work for me I want to be either a doctor, police officer or pilot (don't ask I am complicated). However I am beginning to like being a pilot more and more now. I am not experienced in the aviation industry but I do play Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 lol :). I can "safely" land a Cessna Caravan, although not smoothly, but I feel if I do the pilot school in the simulator I can get better at it. So what do you guys say, what kind of education is needed to be a pilot. Please honest answers, do I have what it takes to be a pilot. Thanks and the best answer gets 10 points.

  1. You better be d**n good at soccer, otherwise the doctor, police, or pilot will be the direction to go.

If you are a soccer phenom i would pursue that. If it is a gift use it, not many people get to be a pro athlete and it will probably pay better too. You only get that chance once, you can go to school to be a pilot, police, or doctor anytime.

As for being a pilot, it isnt what it used to be. 20-40 years ago it was the job to have. Now with the airlines going bankrupt and the economy going to **** i dont have faith in airlines.

Most airlines require that you have a 4 year college degree. Dont worry about how good you are on FlightSim, that will help you in training, but doesnt mean a thing once you have your certificates. I am good at Call of Duty 4, but i wouldnt want to be in real combat or feel ready for it because of it.

You can go civlian and pay for it or go military for free. Military is nice because it is all paid for, but they own you for 4-10 years and you may get shot at too (wee) and/or be willing to kill people beyond your will.

If you have money go civilian and let parents pay for it.

The doctor thing seems ok, but it doesnt seem you want to be a doctor. Police are underpaid.

  2. Go to medical school, then you can afford to fly whatever and whenever you want.  Get Mom or Dad to take you over to the airport or look at AOPA's "Be a Pilot" stuff and see.

It's fun, but as a job -- it ain't what it used to be.

  3. See how you like flying for real first: take a flying lesson at your local airport. They almost always have a plane and instructor available. They might even have a special deal for first-time students; it doesn't hurt to ask! If you do like it and want to do it in college, check out Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona or Florida. That's the place to go if you want to be a pilot! Good luck in whatever you end up doing!
