Any Suggestions about the Costs and companies when moving personal belongings and a Vehicle to Puerto Rico?

I found out the other day I got a job at the San Juan, Puerto Rico Airport. I just recently bought a new 2008 vehicle, a $3000 big screen TV, surround sound, ect. I have seen on other postings about moving to Puerto Rico that people are giving the advice to sell everything before moving. Not only do I not want to do this, I feel I will loose tons of money by selling all these brand new items I only purchased 3-4 months ago.

The Best company I have found for moving my personal stuff in a container is a company called Kestrel

www.kestrel-liner. For my vehicle (208 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited) there are a bunch of places there in Florida.

I already know about the Puerto Rico Import Tax on my Vehicle. It was $5,300. To Ship it from FLorida it is $1000

Anyone know about the Import Taxes on personal items?? (ex. the ones I described earlier)

I know I will have to soend some money to move but it is going to be permanent.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!

  1. when I moved  from New York to Puerto Rico 15 years ago..I paid $20.00 per each electro domestic item. (washer, stove, refrigerator, even the ceiling fans)..

  2. Hello.  I sent plenty of things to PR from Philadelphia, so I can help you. Yes all those new expensive items you have should be sent to PR, I agree. Anything that is not expensive or important to you can be sold. So you already know about the car. But dont worry about paying so much to send it because a jeep wrangler is worth alot in PR, bc they are desirable there. You can check its worth on

& Yes there are import taxes on personal items too  But it isnt much money so dont worry about that. Cars are the only items with high import taxes. I dont know the size of your tv but I doubt it will pass $50 in tax. I paid $20 each time I picked up something no matter how many boxes it was. You pay the tax when you pick it up (in toa baja probably). I use la rosa del monte & they always work good for me, they have locations in FL too. But you can call & compare prices. Goodluck. Enjoy la isla del encanto :)

  3. Go with a well-known company with international moving operations.  There should be no taxes or import duties on personal items being moved to your new residence, other than your Jeep.  Be sure your contract calls for moving all your goods door-to-door, and that means taking the boxes, etc. into your new residence.  Packing and unpacking costs extra, and you don't have to have it, but the insurance won't cover damage if you pack your own goods.

As for the jeep, you will have to weigh the total cost of moving it against your loss if you sold it in the U.S., along with the extra cost of buying an identical vehicle in Puerto Rico.  You may want to consider buying a less-expensive vehicle there as one alternative, considering the smaller area of the place.
