Any Suggestions for a (preferably) low cost alternative power scheme?

Can anybody give me advice for the setting up of an alternative power scheme in our home please? What is the latest technology, what is best and what is available in New Zealand? We are not so young anymore, so it has to be reasonably priced, although we can do some of it ourselves. Are there any good websites you can provide for accessing information on how to build your own power scheme or where we can source/buy equipment for such a scheme. Many thanks.

No alternative power schemes will be inexpensive to install or operate and most have long pay back times.  That is why there is such high resistance to going green.
