Any TIVO experts out there? Need to set up Tivo in a dorm room where college provides the cable. Need advice?

Hi All-

Looking to set up TIVO in my college dorm. The cable is provided through the school, not a cable company. Will this be a problem? It does not come with an on-screen menu. Will I have one with TIVO? Also, there is no phoneline in the room so I will connect it through the internet port. I am looking to get a used box on craigslist or something. Would I be better off with one that already has a lifetime subscription, or just buy the box and get the service through TIVO. Thanks!

If the channels line up with the local cable company, then you shouldn't have any problems, if the channels are different, then it won't work.

I've heard of limited success in notifying tivo and they will create a new lineup just for the college, but I doubt if they will do this for just one or two people.  You'd probably have to show multiple units would be coming online.

The success stories I've heard have all been apartments that provide their own cable to the residents.
