I believe London Met are crying out for AFO's - I heard they are even using ex-military personnell at airports but that ex-squaddies lack the diplomacy of regular cops. I currently serve in Northern Ireland. I am trained on glock 17, MP5, driving armoured cars for response and tactical training. This is routine training for Northern Ireland Police. Im a regular response officer. Can I transfer to a tactical firearm unit ot ARV Unit in UK with my experience. I interested in Met. I wouldnt be thrilled about doing a probation again. I heard AFO in London is a good number with help with rent, living costs and travelling. Is this true. What exactly are the perks? Is it 12 hr shifts 4 on 4 off or what?

Thanks for advice

  1. I know my force are shedding AFO posts over the next 3 years, despite the current climate with gun crime. We even have people at district who have passed the latest course and may never actually gain an AFO post.

Obviously you are already weapon trained. The G36 conversion training is one day, however its the same drills as the MP5. I'n not sure what tactics you use. I would guess they are the same.

As to whether the Met are taking on more AFO's, unfortunately I cannot answer that. I would assume from your position you could quite easily contact the Met and pose those questions directly.

I would also assume with your background and current firearms training and experience you would be an ideal candidate if they were recruiting. I know if I was looking to move forces, if I couldn't move directly into another firearms department I would be reluctant to give up my firearms permit.

Sorry my answer doesn't really help you but good look anyway.
