What are the duties of a veteranarian's assistant/tech? When I bring my dog in I only see what they do in the room, like weigh the dog. What other types of things do they do?

My Vet's office where I take my Dog needs an assistant and I would like to apply, I have some medical background, but I would like to know a little more. Thanks

  1. A Vet Tech requires a degree for this position.  What they do exactly depends on how big the clinic is.  Sometimes the clinic is big enough that they can hire someone just to do the scud work, like mop floors and walk the dogs.

They are the unsung heros of the vet's office.  They basically do everything.  They take blood, they assist in operations, they monitor fluid intake and out put, prep the animals for everything and hold the animals when they are scared so they don't hurt themselves.

These are just a few of the things that they do.  The vet decides what to do and the techs do it.

Without a certificate I doubt that you would be allowed to do much.  Some really small or really large offices allow for an apprentice, who bascially doesn't get paid.  Not very common though.  It will come down to what that vet is looking for and wants.
