Question:

Any advice about breaking up?

My partner and I have been together for nearly 9 years and we've decided to break up. We're going to make it as friendly as possible as we have a four year old daughter. But there's still the problem of splitting everything up etc etc. Any general practical or emotional advice would be great or any dos and donts. Thankyou.

  1. Sorry about your break-up. Everything important here is about your child. Support payments must be handled through the courts, and the only way to properly document what percentage of his future earnings your child is entitled to, is through an attorney.

This can be handled amicably, no hard feelings, and all good lawyers will gladly give you a free 30 minute consultation. Most good lawyers will also let you pay off their fees over time.

Everything else can be replaced . . . .over time.

Now is the time to think about your daughter's future!

    Good Luck!

  2. You need to remember why you are breaking up.

When you are on you own at night with the little one in bed it is easy to become lonely and think back on the good times and easy to forget the bad ones, so keep a good focus on why you are splitting up and why the future is going to be better.

As much as you both say you will remain friends - which you may, you need to also remember that you are no longer in a personal relationship with your ex, and they are not your best friend anymore, i would not recommend seeking personal relationship advice from your ex at all, in fact keep that topic a no no.

get all the practical stuff sorted ASAP before the bitterness sweeps in and it will, and it won't be nice but hold your head up and keep your tongue in your mouth and invest in a few good friends.

    best of luck

  3. Write down all that you own - all that there is to divide with monetary values attached to each. Then begin to divide using the monetary values to make sure it is even.

Start with yourselves and really get that down before bringing in a lawyer.

  4. Seek legal advice from an attorney, or a free legal clinic, locally!
