  1. i tend to agree with sticking to brand names but there is value in some of the off brands. consider what tv this is, is it your primary or secondary? Assuming it is the main tv, i will say stick to a brand name, but not just because of the name. More often than not, brand names will have fewer corners cut such as viewing angle, inputs, and video processing.. 26" on a flat panel is a rough size. you will notice that 32" tvs are nearly the same price. 26" tvs seemed to be priced as if the consumer will not be able to fit anything larger due to space restriction. i good 26 to look at though is a toshiba 26av500u. it has solid colors and a nice black level. retails around $550. but for around $100 bucks you could be into a 32" tv that is nicer. for example lg makes a 32lg30 model that retails for $799 but can be found as low as $650 every so often at your local circuit city. this tv has fantastic contrast and great color. (not to mention a very s**y frame)

fyi: many people are confused by contrast... that 10,000:1 number you see. unfortunately the industry does not standardize this number so 10,000:1 on samsung is not the same as 10,000:1 on sony and so on... just look at the black and white parts of an image on each and the whiter white and blacker black has the better contrast, lol.
