Question:

Any advice for a novice swimmer?

Holly c**p, I have a whole new appreciation for swimmers!

I’ve been working out twice a day and decided to implement swimming into my morning routine. I started this morning and I absolutely got worked! After a full lap at the local gym, my body was already fatigued. I somehow worked out for 40 minutes alternating swimming a lap with a slow in-water jog.

Does anyone know of any in-pool workout programs to help improve my swimming (style and endurance)? I understand that the more I swim the better I will get, but I’m looking for a program which consists of number of laps, type of laps (freestyle, breaststroke…not sure really what the breaststroke is but thought I’d throw it out anyway), that kind of thing.

Thanks in advance for the help!

  1. just do like butterfly, backstroke, breastroke, then freestyle 1 lap of each then rest for like 2 minutes, then do it like 10 more times

  2. Do exactly what you like and want to do--only build up slowly.  You can't lay down and do 100 sit-ups without paying a price, and the same is true for swimming.  You have to slowly build up to what you feel is right for you.

Good luck . . . and enjoy  yourself!

  3. just keep swimming laps. u'll be tired after u swim b/c swimming works almost all of ur muscles. the more u swim, the better ur endurance is. there are 4 diff. types of main strokes. butterfly, breast, back, and free. just keep swimming laps. switch out between swimming and lifting weights and such. it gives u some time to recover from swimming.
