Any advice for bands from the US crossing the border into canada?

I have heard numerous horror stories about US bands having problems crossing the border into canada. Besides the obvious answer about telling the truth and issues with criminal histories. I have not found any info on what kind of taxes or duties that you may be charged for playing(working) and bringing merch to sell.

In my case I probably won't make very much money if any at all.. more likely I will spend far more than I make. I cannot however find out any info about what they might charge me in order to play ina bar versus a gallery or other non profit and how many CD's can I bring without being taxed?

  1. There is a special site about it on the Canada Immgration website, not to be confused with immigration rip off lawyer sites -

DONT have a criminal record, dont try to bring drugs, dont lie about anything to the border guards, bring the proper identification and enough money - and I dont believe anyone will charge you - unless you go to one of those bogus immigration lawyers -

There was something about you not needing a visa or anything depending on how long you plan to be here - so check it out

  2. Foreign artists coming to Canada to perform, as well as their essential support staff—the people that are integral to the performance—can work without a permit if they are only performing here for a limited period of time and will not be performing in a bar or restaurant.

If they will be performing in a bar or restaurant, performers and their staff each need a work permit.

Performing artists coming to work in Canada cannot enter into an employment relationship with the Canadian group that has contracted for their services. They must also not perform for the production of a movie, television or radio broadcast.
