Question:

Any advice for someone who is adopting a cockatiel?

On Friday I am adopting a cockatiel from a bird rescue. It hasn't been sexed so we are not sure if it is male or female. I am also not sure how old it is because the person who abandoned it didn't give any information.

I have a cage all set up for it and I have a lot of time to spend with it, but I was hoping someone who has been in a similar situation can give me some advice.

I know for the first few days it may be shy and should be left alone to get used to it's new surroundings. I also know that once it does get used to living here it may not be tame at all.

How can I win this bird's heart? What would you do bird lovers?

  1. tiels are great birds, mine was a rehome too, and i commend you for rehoming one as well. My tiel was a little shy at first but he percked right up when i gave him some millet sprays (they loove that) it may take awhile but im sure ur tiel will become good buds with you! :)   check out http://www.parrotcentral.net/bringing_ho... for a good guide on bringing home you bird

  2. I was given two cockatiels a male and female since they had already bonded with each other they did not like humans at all and would attack me.

I found that the female was the key. She liked to eat I would give small pieces of bread for them to eat. Then they both started eating out of my hand through the cage. When I let them out it was one at a time.

Hope that helps it worked for me.

  3. hey!  we used to have a pair - Bonnie & Clyde -   the best advice i could give is to go out and buy one of those books that is about your new pet.  those books usually have a section that will tell you how to figure out boy/girl  & hints on how to tell how old.  we got ours from neighbor who was breeder
