My daughter and her roommate are going to Spain in the middle of June for 6 weeks to study abroad. They will be in Madrid, Barcelona and Grenada. They have never traveled to another country before (neither have I) so they could use any advice at all. Food, safety, plane ride, sightseeing, etc.

  1. remember to look the other way when crossing the rad or they will get run over

    everything else is pretty normall..........

  2. I've been to Barcelona many times but not Grenada or Madrid.  Food you can buy wherever, restuaraunts ect. it's a civilized place, safety - you don't need to take any major precautions but be warned that their crazier drivers over there.  Plane ride- straightforward.  Bring a Nintendo DS or something.  Sightseeing - I'd see the Sagrada Familia, Monjuic,  The Old Cathedral, and then some other things of your choice.  that's in barcelona.

  3. Check in with the Embassies of their countries origin upon arrival, carrying proper ID's passports at all time's, try and book personal guides for all tour's, only drink bottled water even when brushing your teeth, ask the hotel front desk for recommended restaurants, and try and travel in large group's of people. Government sponsored web site's will also give you a lot of advise for traveling to different countries.

  4. Spain is very safe.  Worst thing is pick pockets.  And beach thieves who watch tourist hide their valuables and go in the water.  Just tell them to use good common tourisism sense:

-Never take valuable to the beach unless someone will guard them

-Purse or handbag diagonal across the body with the opening to towards the body

    -be aware of your surroundings.

-for Spain, Marrocan looking guys in silk jogging suits on the beach 99.9% of the time are beach theives.  Also Gypsi women with small babies selling flowers or newspapers, guard your valuables!!!!

Have the ladies look at these sites for cool things to see and do in Barcelona:

One thing they should not miss, just outside Barcelona, is the monistary up on the mountains..

    They will have a blast!!!!!!

Hotels in Spain are a few stars behind.  What we call a 2 star they call a 3 star.  But, their 2 star hotels, they call Hostals, are normally very clean and safe.  Just usually no TV, no pool, no phone in the room.  plain Jane but clean.  Great value most times.
