Any advice on laser eye surgery?

I am 20 years old and my vision is -2.75 in both eyes, i'm wearing contact lenses right now. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to get leser eye surgery righ now.

If yes, how long would it last before it deteriorates. I ask this because I heard that after ten years you can loose your eye sight.

Can someone please tell me if i can get the procedure right now and how long it would last?

Thank you.

  1. I think it's a good idea, but that's only my opinion.

If you're gonna do it, you should think of doing it when

you really need it.  Also make sure that the person

your optometrist is doing it right because if he makes

a mistake it could be very bad for you in the future.

So make sure that you get the right person to do it

    for you.

  2. Really check into what your doing because i also wanted it done until I watched a special on tv about all the people it went wrong for blurred vision shadows kaledoscope images scarried the h**l out of me good luck maybe contact news station for footage It was just on about two weeks ago

  3. Well I'm 22 and had all laser interlase lasik eye surgery last Thursday and love it already. I went to my 24 hour follow up on friday and my vision is now 20/20 (I was classified as legally blind before the procedure). The first 24 hours were definitely uncomfortable (I slept most of it though). I was told by my surgeon that due to my age there is a 30% chance that I will need what they call an enhancement procedure in 10 years. However my surgery came with 100% lifetime guarantee so if I do need an enhancement I won't need to pay again which is nice since the procedure did cost me $4000. Like the other posters have suggested go to a free consolation and find out if you are a candidate (I actually went to a few places). I ended up going to Lasik Plus (http://www.lasikplus.com/), they have tons of locations. During the consolation you bascially go through a very in depth eye exam to check various things (one of the big ones is testing the thickness of your cornea (if they're not that thick it will limit which types of lasik surgery you may be able to get, if any). Generally they won't do surgery if your vision has not been stabilized for at least 1-2 years. Also, your vision is not very bad so they may still recommend you wait a few more years. Just remember there are risks but the recent FDA complainants are not new (or really lot when you consider how many people have had it done), the press just focuses on them every once in a while. The key is to make sure you find a surgeon that you feel comfortable in that is willing to answer any questions you may have. Also the poster that said the surgery is reversible for up to 2 years is totally wrong! Enhancements can be preformed, but there is no way the procedure can be reversed.

  4. I'm in the Air Force and i went to get the surgery know the because I went to see about getting the surgery but i was turned away and told to wait until I'm 25. but that may only be air force policy in any case i wuld still wait

  5. do laser eye surgery on one eye 1st....incase something goes wrong...u can still see from the other eye..

  6. Hi -- I wore contacts for 30 years.  Liked to work outside, so had to wear glasses so that my contacts wouldn't get dirty and hurt.

Loved the contacts as compared to glasses.

Had Laser surgery nine years ago.  I was more nearsighted than you, and I asked that they fix my left eye for reading and my right eye for long distance.

After the Laser surgery, which was on a Friday, I returned to work on Monday.  I left work early to have a follow-up eye exam, and everything was perfect.  In addition, I can read with both eyes and see distance with both at 20-20.  The right eye still sees distance better.

Following the Laser surgery, they simply asked that I stay in bed for at least 36 hours and try not to move my head too much.

I had no pain, and still have great vision.

My doctor has done a follow-up and I do not yet need more correction.  (I'm now 73 y/o)  If my eyes get worse, he will do them again (at less cost than I paid originally.)

Get someone who has done a lot.  Best of luck

  7. pretty dangerous.....

    i think

sorry i'm not much help am i?! :P

  8. You can have laser eye surgery at any age. No, it does not ever deteriorate. Go for it!! I had it done on one eye only, to give me monovision. One eye sees close up, so you can read without glasses, the other sees far objects. It is reversible up to 2 yrs if you aren't happy with the results. The exam is free, and very through. You'd have to pay a lot for this exam anywhere else. Check it out. You're not obligated to make a decision on the spot. You can take your time.

  9. advice?

    its not a DIY job.........

  10. i got my surgery in 1997.  that makes it 11 years for me.  i was a -10 and a -9.75.  they weren't able to fully correct my vision to 20/20 because my retinas were too taut.  but i came in to a 20/25 and i was grateful, because i could wake up and see my son's smiling face clearly without having to put on my coke-bottle-bottoms first.  i still don't wear glasses, except when it's late at night and i'm driving.

i would suggest seriously talking to an opthalmologist about your concerns, or get the names of the best lasik/vizex/prk/pk practitioners in your area.

    good luck, and happy seeing!

  11. The big concern is stability of your vision right now.  You don't want lasik until your prescription has stabilized, otherwise in a few years you'll need glasses/contacts again.  Most lasik places offer a free initial consultation to see if you would be a candidate.  The doctor will also check out the thickness of your cornea (as well as a few other things) to make sure it is right for you.

In some cases you may need a "tune up" (basically a repeat of the procedure) if your vision drifts out again.  Some places will offer to cover tune ups for free.  Also there is a chance that your vision will not be that good in one or both eyes, and you will need to get it redone.

Eventually (late 30s or in your 40s) your reading vision may start to go out.  This is inevitable for most of us, whether or not we get lasik.  Lasik won't correct for this, since it can correct for reading vision or distance vision, but not both.  Some people get one eye corrected for reading, the other for distance.

  12. wait till you're at least 25 since ur eye vision is still changing at ur age.

  13. go for it
