I am 34 and have bulging disc in my lower back, Dr. said I have no limitations, but I am afraid that if I take a spill, I might injure myself even more. I ride Quarter Horses.

  1. Well ive been riding with a budging L5 disk for the last 4 years and im in my mid 40's....I was afraid too, when I started back up. I took off 3 weeks when I got out of the hospital and did alot of gym work, especially ab strengthening and just took it slow to build up my confidence. I just did ring work training with my pleasure horses and didnt go back to ponying and trail riding for about 6 months. I guess its all relative, you always take chances when you ride, that is the risk. just ask yourself is it worth the risk, if it is, be happy and just go for it.

  2. I really suggest you switch to gaited horses.  The bulging disc may cause no problems now but the constant jarring from a non-gaited horse may cause problems if you ride a lot.

Breeds such as the Missouri Fox Trotters,  Tennessee Walkers, and the Cadillac of breeds the Peruvian Paso ( Peruvians are as smooth as riding on a cloud but too slow in their gait for me), are all excellent for people with back trouble.

If you ever get to south central Missouri I could let you try out one of our Fox Trotters.

  3. I would be careful, but my trainer broke her back twice and is an grand prix rider that has jumped as big as 6'3. So, maybe take it easy in the beginning and then just work your way up.

  4. Did you specifically discuss horseback riding with your doctor, and more importantly, is your doctor either an orthopedic or neurologic specialist?

I would not take any chances, and be absolutely sure you have been cleared by a specialist before doing much riding.  I was an orthopedic nurse for many years and have seen the nightmare that herniated discs can become.

Be completely honest about everything you intend to do on horseback when you discuss this.
