Any advice on the best places to stay in the UK?

We are visiting London, Lincoln, Grimsby, Liverpool, and the Isle of Man to research our family from those areas. Any idea on the best hotels/hostels/bed&breakfast places for the money? We're looking for the cheapest options available, yet with clean rooms in safe neighborhoods. I've called several locations recommended by travel books, but several seem to be booked. Any recommendations?
