Up until Friday gone, my cordless telephone, computer and Sky were all up and working. As we were having wood flooring put down in the hallway today and the telephone cable ran under the old carpet, we thought best to by an extension lead to run around the ceiling in case anything ever went wrong with the BT line. I bought an extension lead from Homebase and was told it was a simple job to re-connect all the appliances. 6 hours later on Saturday and a few choice words later, not all 3 would work together! When all were connected, the phone would dial but not ring a number and if I rang the home number from my mobile, I got the engaged signal. I have connected the computer and an old phone back onto the old lead, but the cordless phone will not work. I am so baffled why all 3 will now not work on the new extension lead. Any ideas please?

  1. If you give more info as how you have connected the wires ie. is it a plug-in type extension or have you wired it into the sockets then we maybe able to help.

From the sounds of what you have written so far, one of the extension wires has a short circuit causing the line to be engaged........but like I say, more info is reqd....

ADDITIONAL.....it does sound like the old extn wiring is still connected to the nte and has been damaged / disturbed during your floor laying putting a short circuit on the line causing engaged when rang. If there's also no dial tone at the extn but there is at the nte, it is also going inter dis' (intermittently disconnected)

Make sure the old extn wiring is fully disconnected at both ends before trying again with the new one.

  2. the original cable that went under the carpet. has it been disconnected from the nte5? if not it can still short out the whole circuit. if you remove the front plate from the nte5 and check the cordless phone in the test point, this will confirm if it is the wiring or the phone thats playing up.

  3. sounds like the wiring is wrong somewhere down the line.  Shame you had to alter it when it was working fine.  Maybe you should take the lead back to the shop and ask them to replace it to see if it is faulty.  Sometimes new things are.
