I got some great answers about my dog who just had heart worm treatment last week I thank all who answered me back. In the meantime while I was waiting for feedback I called a emergency animal clinic and asked them what I had asked on here about what is normal panting and what to look out for as I'm paranoid that he was having a reaction. They were not helpful at all if anything they just scared me more. They said there is a fine line between whats normal and whats not. That he should be seen. I told them I just couldn't afford another trip right now I would need to wait until the morning when my vet was open and they said he needed to be seen within a couple of hours or he could die. Even though I know my dogs behaviors you cant tell if they are having a reaction until its too late. This just doesn't seem right but maybe I am wrong. Is there anyone who has gone through treatment with their dog? And did your dog ever pant not consistently but on and off pretty much like they did before they got treatment?

  1. i found out my dog had heartworms in December, so i talked to the vet and they told me all about it and the treatment, i asked the risks of death they said its very rare, so i took her in she was a level 2, she was going to have 3 shots...so i took her in 6 am on a Monday morning went and picked her up later that evening, they told me not to let her move around hardly at all , take her out on a leash things like that , i did all of that i didnt have to keep her confined or nothing because she didnt even want to move. the next day i noticed her whole right side of her body was swollen and was whining constantly, my dog never whined before. so i called the vet and told them i was bringing her in , they said no its normal her side is swollen from the shot, not to bring her in she was fine, i went to sleep that night woke up , could not find her at all, i found her in the basement and she had passed away. to me i will never get the treatment again, i have my dogs on the preventative , but if i was to find out they had them i would not do the treatment, before my dog had the shot she was happy, running, playing ...and two days after the "treatment" she was dead.

  2. i have not gone through this personally, but i work at a vet. i think that if he is doing what he was before then he is ok. if he starts acting weak or sick then he needs to be seen immediately.  i would call your vet to see what he says about the dogs behavior but i think he is ok. just make sure he doesn't overdo himself.
