  1. The crew doesn't plan the schedule, the dispatch and flight scheduling folks do. The crew just follows the plan.

  3. Airline crew schedules are done by a process of bidding. The more senior pilots gets first bid on a the days that they are avialable to fly, and then the next in line gets their choice. This means that the new pilots get stuck with all the days that the senior pilots did not bid on, or if all schedules are filled, the new pilots get put on stand-by, so if one crew member calls off or not available, the standby crew member will take all those flights.
