Any alternative to cooking oil?

I kinda started mixing things before I checked if I had everything... Silly me. Anywho, no vegetable oil left in my house apparently, is there anything I can use to substitute? My mother suggested olive oil.

  1. depends on what recipe you are using. In a cake mix it will give an off flavor. To fry it is fine. Cake mix I would substitute applesauce, less fat, more moist.

  2. I wouldn't use olive oil in anything sweet.  If you are making something savory...it would be best if the olive oil is NOT extra virgin....just plain ole olive oil has a less pronounced olive taste.

  3. I've used olive oil before and not really noticed a difference.  I didn't taste the olive-ness that others are talking about.  The cake seemed a bit heavier, but it was by no means inedible.

    Good luck!

  4. Pam it works with  anything

  5. My grandma uses applesauce as a fat free substitute

  6. NEVER use olive oil in a dessert recipe! I made that mistake once while making a cake. All I could taste was the olive oil and I ended up tossing it out. If you're using it for sauteeing or greasing a pan or cooking an entree, go ahead with the olive oil. For a dessert, melt some margarine.

  7. That depends on what you are making.  You can use margarine if its a cake or cookies, or even shortening, melted.  Olive oil is a bit heavy.

  8. Butter.

    Any other oil.

    Margerine

    Lard

    Shortening.

It will depend on what you are cooking.
